Lambda Athena - The Idea The Design The Razor
Athena is the second model of “Lambda Razors” released in late 2021. As soon as it hit the market, we received numerous excellent reviews. Actually, it became so popular that we couldn’t even keep up with the demand. The main quality of Lambda Athena is its efficiency, while still being gentle and smooth on the skin. A lot of customers praised Athena, making it quickly one of the most popular safety razors on the market.
Why Athena?
Athena, is an ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, warfare, and handicraft. Athena was regarded as the patron and protectress of various cities across Greece, particularly the city of Athens, from which she most likely received her name. The Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens is dedicated to her. Her major symbols include owls, olive trees, snakes, and the Gorgoneion. In art, she is generally depicted wearing a helmet and holding a spear.In Greek mythology, Athena was believed to have been born from the forehead of her father Zeus. In some versions of the story, Athena has no mother and is born from Zeus’ forehead by parthenogenesis. In others, such as Hesiod’s Theogony, Zeus swallows his consort Metis, who was pregnant with Athena; in this version, Athena is first born within Zeus and then escapes from his body through his forehead.
We were inspired by the goddess Athena, as the character of the razor has a connection to what she symbolizes. Wisdom, craftsmanship, and quiet strength. For us, Lambda Athena is a “wise war machine” without any exaggerations in its design. The “owl,” one of the most important symbols of the goddess Athena, also inspired us in the design of the razor’s head profile.
Head Design
Athena’s head design is quite unique. We spent many hours designing until we achieved a perfect geometry that provides smooth and efficient shaves for everyone. There is no customer reporting to us that Athena is mild, non-efficient, or aggressive and non-smooth. We tried to achieve the perfect balance between smoothness and efficiency, and it seems we did it.

A few important characteristics that give us the edge:
Edge-to-edge clamping: This is one of the most important aspects of our designs and we have implemented it from the very beginning. This type of blade clamping eliminates blade chatter, resulting in a smoother shave. The blade cuts through like a laser beam, effortlessly gliding through the hair.
- “Blind” bottom plate: The underside of the bottom plate is blind, meaning it does not have any holes or openings. This helps prevent slippery lather from ending up on the top of the handle and consequently on your hands.
- Lather channels on the bottom plate: Athena’s bottom plate design is unique, meaning that it features specially designed lather channels that drive lather and water out to the sides of the plate. When you rinse the head, water comes out from the sides of the head, perfectly cleaning the blade. This design is labor-intensive in CNC, requiring a significant amount of machining time.
- Neutral blade exposure: With zero blade exposure, you can be sure that the razor is safe, even for a beginner in traditional wet shaving.
- Small blade gap: Athena features a relatively small blade gap, while still being highly efficient. Again, this adds up to Athena being safe and smooth for everyone.
Handle Design
For the design of the handle, we drew inspiration from a unique type of ancient Greek amphora called a “lekythos”. This type of amphora was used in ancient times as a vessel to store perfumes for young women and athletes. We adapted the shape to create a razor handle that still maintains the essence of the original concept.
Material
We use a special bronze alloy for Athena, which exhibits excellent corrosion resistance for this type of material. It is widely used in marine applications and is highly expensive. It is a few times more expensive than 316 stainless steel! However, it will need some care in order to maintain its great mirror finish over time, as it will develop a slight patina if left in humid environments. With proper care, it will maintain its original finish effortlessly.

Manufacturing
We are proud to manufacture our razors in Greece. The razors are manufactured entirely on the latest spec CNC machines, and we always ensure that the components are made with the highest precision.
The components are hand-finished to a mirror-like polish. This is a meticulous task that requires a lot of time time and attention to detail.
We utilize the laser engraving technique for logos and serial numbers.
Serial Numbering
We assign a unique serial number to each of our razors. It is positioned below the surface of the bottom plate. The format of the serial numbers is as follows:
xx-yyy
,where xx represents the year of manufacture and yyy represents the sequential number, starting from 001 for the first batch of that year.
Personalized booklet
Each razor comes with a personalized booklet. On the first inside page, there is the serial number of the razor, the model, and the name of the customer, all of which are handwritten. There is also a hand sign at the bottom of the page. This way, you can be sure that your razor is genuine. We also provide some brief information about “Lambda Razors” and our products.
Luxury Wooden Case
Lambda Razors is the only safety razor manufacturer offering such a luxurious and elegant packaging. We don’t want to offer a mass production item which is just a tool used to shave your beard. Our philosophy is to offer a meticulously crafted, collectable item, which will be with you for many years. And what better way to present a special and unique item than “dressing” it with the best “clothing” out there?
Lambda Athena comes as standard with a high quality, perfectly crafted wooden case made of solid African mahogany wood.* It is designed in 3D CAD software and manufactured to tight tolerances.
The two pieces of the case are shaped on CNC machines with special recesses inside them so the razor can fit tightly inside without moving when the case is closed. Additionally we are using a special beige color, suede-like fabric on the case recesses, so the razor will sit safely inside without any damage danger for the razor or the box itself.
The two pieces of the wooden case are connected together by a pair of bronze hinges.
The box also features a set of magnets embedded on the wood, so the top cap stays closed, a very useful feature when traveling.
On the top cap, you will find our logo engraved, as well as the model “symbol” on the front side. On the bottom there is an engraving of our website as well as the production date.
*African Mahogany wood
We made a long research to use a materials that would be elegant looking and matching the character of the razor. We have chosen a special wood, the African mahogany which add a luxury note to the whole product. Below you can read a short description of the wood and it’s specifications.
“Depending on its origin, growth conditions and specific strain (“African Mahogany” encompasses four different Khaya species), it color can range from a pale pink or muted orange, to a somewhat darker reddish- or golden-brown. It can also have darker striping, and, aesthetically, it can be further enhanced through figuring (ribbon; wavy diagonal; mottled) and varying levels of chatoyance.
Its grains are typically either straight or interlocked. It works, turns and finishes easily, and beautifully, although boards which feature interlocked grains can occasionally pose tearout issues when planing, joining or resawing.”

The Athena is mild and damn thorough. Due to its weight and shape, it can be guided cleanly. With the grain is a pleasure, against the grain the Athena revealed its strength. Without grumbling or hacking in the slightest, it glided perfectly over the skin. Very clean, no irritation. After a short water shave to clean off my chin and then cold water, my skin felt great. The processing is perfect. Like the shave itself, the safety razor is also a dream to look at. A very nice piece of innovation.

I don’t know how he does it and it’s a trade secret of his success but the Athena is very efficient while providing an ultra comfortable shave!! All you can expect in a razor. I don’t want to get into technical info -theo has that in great detail on website. This is extremely well made/machined razor- great finish absolutely no machine marks- great cap- sometimes even on high end razors the cap is a little thin making edges slightly sharp – not the case here. Base plate has water grooves for foam and water to flow thru while shaving – works perfectly – super design. Love the handle several different designs including a ring hear the bottom – the very bottom has a button design- ok but has no bearing on shave- the handle although smooth is not slick and does not slip in hands- weight is geared more to top of handle and i would consider this more of a cap cutting razor ( shallow angle) good weight not overly heavy shave was spot on – i would consider medium mild to mild mild- no irritation or minor cuts – my blade of choice is persona made in usa ( more on the sharp side of razors but smooth) would highly recommend this razor for the individuals who have sensitive skin and like a mild effortless shave oh by the way i ordered this directly from the web site and i have never dealt with anyone nicer than Theo. I own about 200 razors mostly vintage of almost every type. Some are very collectible. The Athena gives a better shave than almost anything I have ever tried. It manages to deliver a smooth and comfortable shave that is extraordinarily efficient also especially shaving against the grain on a second pass. I loved the look of this piece of art from the first picture i saw of the Athena. I added my name to the waiting list and-well-waited. Theo contacted me once the batch was ready to see if i had a preference of serial number which was a nice touch. I was kept in the loop of how the progress with “My” razor was doing again a very nice personal touch. Theo is just a nice guy to deal with. The razor arrived and i could hardly contain myself to open the package. In the “flesh” the Athena is a thing of beauty from the outside of the box to the opening of the lid. A very well-made razor holder the smooth action of the lid just oozes quality and then you see the razor honestly i was just “wow”. So well made. The engraving is precise and perfect. The fit and finish again is fantastic – screaming QUALITY. Even the bottom of the top cap blade posts are engraved with the Lambda logo another quality touch. In the hand the razor is weighty i knew this from the website specs and do prefer a bit weight to my razors so all is good. I have used the razor a few times now and have also completed some comparison shaves with some of my other favourite razors including the Blutt 0.86 and Tatara Masamune. I have to say it is up there at the top of the list. I have only used the Personna “Med Prep” blades in it so far as i get consistent results with this blade. The Shave is sublime the Athena just glides over the face although the razor feels “mild” on the skin i found it easily efficient enough for me at no time does the razor feel as if it is going to bite. I usually complete a 2-pass shave routine WTG then ATG with touch ups XTG and the Athena is very capable of this routine -however- if i wanted to do a full third pass i have no worries about it giving me any irritation. The shave angle is very easy to find and the razor gives you “Audio feedback” when it is cutting and goes silent when there is nothing to remove so easy to use. The blade is held so securely that there is no chatter whatsoever. Everything just builds shaving confidence. Every shave i have had has been a BBS comfortable finish without any irritation/indication from aftershaves etc. I will run some other blades through it including Kai and Feather and have no worries about using these “sharper” (YMMV) blades through it. The razor cleans up easily to get it back to its original beauty in no time following the easy cleaning instructions. What’s not to like? I can highly recommend this razor if you want a comfortable shave using a razor that is just a real work of art. Well done Theo. Do you want one? – of course you do!

Hello Lambda Team. Where to start …. ? I received an email today asking me to give my opinion on my purchase. This when general I never do. To begin with this is the first time that I have taken as much pleasure in admiring the container as much as the content. The magnificent mahogany-style oiled wooden box is absolutely beautiful (engraving on the top … closing magnet …. protective pads under the bottom .. polished brass screws and hinges …. cutting and internal protection in felt cream … 2 packs of Bic Astor blades included ….. Whaouhhhh . At this stage for me the price of the product is already largely justified !! For example my penultimate purchase in France from a craftsman offering beautiful and good high-end razors- please offer an option!!!! (200 euros) a wooden box made by hand with its engraving but without all the qualities and work carried out by that of Lamda Razor. Regarding my review of the Famous Athena Razor. Wow again!! It is splendid … a marvel. The work on it and the finishes are of a very high level (Polishing …. chiseling … micro-sandblasting … cutting … engraved logo affixed to the 2 sides and underside of the base plate as well as the razor heels. This is just incredible and never seen at this price! Last point the shave. The Athena is for me a moderately aggressive but extremely effective razor. An iron fist in a velvet glove. The blade feel is light and will let you know you have the right angle. No irritation…tightness or discomfort after shaving even with adding a little pressure. I think so and write that can d’artisan manage to offer a product as successful as this one. I am very impressed by such work and moreover at this price! The Athena has no other competitor on the market at this price and would undoubtedly be worth double its price. Ps: I would like a second one in order to leave this one almost new on display on my shelf 🙂 🙂 🙂 To finish I would like to have as much luck to get the Ares V2 next time. Friendship of France

I’m not that big of a fan of heavy planes. I actually prefer the light ones (AL13 CX-Titan) but due to the great look the Athena just had to be found despite the impressive weight. Since there was a pack of Ladas in the closet take this one to test it. You can’t get more than blood points. Said and done. blade inserted. It is perfectly centered and the thread runs buttery smooth. Really heavy but not uncomfortable in the hand. With this grip shape it is great to guide and steer. Loaded the Yaqi and whipped it into a fine foam then smack it in the face. First pull across the neck with the Athena…uhhh is there even a blade in there? A gentle glide over the skin. You can hardly feel the blade (compared to the Henson AL13 or GreenCult). 3 rounds were enjoyed although two would have been enough but there was still enough foam in the bowl. So why not consume. Result? Absolutely BBS! Extinguished with the AS Antica Barbiera. No burning or anything. I haven’t had such a gentle and thorough shave after 3 rounds. Not a single blood spot (problem area corner of the mouth) no irritation of the skin. Simply nothing to complain about. Gentle and efficient at the same time. I’ve always wanted a plane like this. Anyway I’m totally in love with this beauty. Thanks for your great work.

This is one of the most beautiful razors I have come across. Built like a tank yet nimble when you use it. The blade exposure is zero and yet you have the illusion of blade feel. The razor is super effective/efficient while also being remarkably mild. This is truly the best of both worlds. Think R41 results with Tech smoothness and comfort. And then there is the box! Nothing to add and definitely saves you a stand – no need. Theo has been super responsive in the process and I have gotten my razor solidly packed according to what we agreed. I am tempted to also get Ares but as I am a daily shaver Athena is plenty of razor already! Amazing!!

Best razor I have ever used by some margin. I am a wet shave enthusiast and own quite a few razors from Tatara Masamune – Murumasa – Blutt BR-1 – OneBlade Genesis and the Athena beats all of them. The attention to detail on the razor is exquisite – polished to absolute perfection with no blemishes. It is like holding a piece of jewellery in your hand. The stand out feature has to be the very audible noise feedback given when shaving at the correct angle. It really trains you to shave efficiently and hit that sweet spot every time.

I received the razor nearly a month ago but wanted to do some shaves before writing a review: First things first. Athena is a safety razor of unparalleled beauty. The design of the handle resembling an ancient Greek Amforeas is an idea that distinguishes it from all other razors and makes it truly unique. To the most important part now: the razor is truly a “weapon”. Even though it is the mild one (between that and its brother “Ares”) it’s highly efficient. Personally I use it to clear-off 3-5 day beard and it works perfectly leaving me without any irritations. Now combining it with a Feather blade really turns it in a “weapon of mass destruction”…Being relatively new to this kind of shaving my previous experience with the “well known” beginner’s razor of the industry left me disappointed and unhappy as it simply did not “cut” enough for me. So I decided to instantly go for a more expensive but definitely more efficient and high end piece of equipment. I could not be happier with my decision. Athena gave me what I was looking for. Only “problem” now is that I got intrigued and wonder what “Ares” can do too…. I think I’ll join the waiting list for that soon enough.

I already own a couple of razors like Overlander – Blackbird Ti – Tatara Masamune/Nodachi – but this Athena has an extra touch of soul. It needs a couple of shaves for the learning curve to get the full efficiency. But since the first shave I feel it is smooth and safe. I have only tried Gillette 7’O Clock black and Astor blades for the moment. I really like this razor. Beautiful and so well finished. I forgot to mention the soundtrack! Unbelievable combination of efficiency and comfort! I had read forums regarding the Athena’s ability to shave smoothly against the grain and I have not been disappointed. I have a very thick beard and it’s a must to shave against the grain. This razor shines on that third and final pass. I have over a dozen artisan razors – SE and DE – and this is my favorite thus far. If you have not been wet shaving for very long – be patient. It’s one of the best out there. If you’re a few months into wet shaving – you’ll be ecstatic after your 1st shave.

Εκτός του ότι είναι ένα στολίδι – κομψοτέχνημα -η μηχανη ειναι εκπληπτικη απο αποψη αποδοσης. Ιδανικο βαρος για το δικο μου γουστο. I received the razor five days ago and have just finished my second shave. Usually when I buy a new high-end razor, I’m often left with mixed feelings. In this case, though, I can definitely say that it’s a great combination of softness and performance. The shaving angle is intuitive and you don’t have to spend a lot of time trying to overdo it. From the first run through, I knew this was a very special instrument. Apart from the brilliant looks, obviously the engineering work regarding the geometry and the way it actually works is extremely good.

A jaw-dropping razor in all respects. Have been a wet shaver for decades and have a dozen razors, some vintage and some present day. THIS one beats them all, hands down.
